Wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan's availability for the T20I series against New Zealand, starting today, is uncertain as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced he was undergoing medical evaluation due to discomfort in his right leg.
During Wednesday's training session, Azam reported discomfort in his right knee and calf muscle while practicing in the nets, the PCB stated in a released statement.
"He received immediate medical attention and treatment," the statement read.
Currently, Azam is under the supervision of the medical team, and a decision regarding his participation in the upcoming matches against New Zealand will depend on the results of radiology reports, the board added.
Pakistan is set to host New Zealand for five T20Is, commencing in Rawalpindi on April 18th, with both teams preparing for the T20 World Cup scheduled for June in the United States and the West Indies.
Despite Azam's recent absence from international matches since March 2023 against Afghanistan, he was included in the squad. During a press briefing in Lahore, national selection team member Bilal Afzal highlighted Azam's performance statistics and the strategies devised by the coach and captain.
Afzal emphasized the committee's decision to offer Azam a significant opportunity, expressing optimism that his confidence would grow in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup.
