Amidst public backlash, former cricketer Salman Butt has been dropped from the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) selection committee, just days after his appointment.
Salman Butt's PCB Selection Committee Appointment Reversed Amidst Public Backlash
In a sudden turn of events, former cricketer Salman Butt's appointment to the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) selection committee has been revoked following a wave of public criticism. The decision was announced by Pakistan men's cricket team chief selector Wahab Riaz during a press conference on Saturday.
Butt's appointment, along with that of Kamran Akmal and Rao Iftikhar Anjum, was met with immediate opposition from fans, media, and former cricketers. The primary concern stemmed from Butt's involvement in a high-profile spot-fixing scandal that resulted in a ban from international cricket.
Addressing the media, Riaz stated, "I am reversing that decision, and I've already spoken to Salman Butt and told him that he cannot be a part of my team because I do not want that people link us in any way."
Riaz further explained that Butt's appointment was primarily intended to seek his expertise and insights on domestic cricket, but the public uproar forced a reconsideration.
"Firstly, I want to clarify that he is not on any PCB panel. Secondly, he is a good cricketing mind who understands cricket and has been covering domestic cricket for the past two to three years. He was made my consultant only as far as taking his opinion is concerned on which some people and media houses are probably doing propaganda, trying to ruin affairs and linking me with it," Riaz stated.
The PCB's decision to reverse Butt's appointment underscores the importance of public sentiment in decision-making, particularly in sports where fan engagement plays a crucial role.
