Lionel Messi has won his eighth Ballon d'Or award, recognizing him as the best soccer player in the world for 2023. The award was presented at a ceremony in Paris on October 30, 2023.
Messi's victory was largely due to his success with Argentina in the 2022 World Cup, where he led the team to their first title in 36 years. He scored two goals in the final against France, and was named the player of the tournament.
Messi also had a solid season at club level with Paris Saint-Germain, where he scored 16 goals and provided 16 assists in Ligue 1. He helped the team win the league title and the French Super Cup.
Messi's eight Ballon d'Or awards are more than any other player in history. He has now won the award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021, and 2023.
In his acceptance speech, Messi thanked his teammates, coaches, and family for their support. He also dedicated the award to his late compatriot, Diego Maradona.
"This is a very special moment for me," Messi said. "I've always dreamed of winning the World Cup, and I was finally able to do that last year. I'm so grateful to my teammates and coaches for helping me achieve my dream. I also want to thank my family and friends for their support. And of course, I want to dedicate this award to Diego Maradona."
Messi's victory is a testament to his incredible talent and longevity. He is one of the greatest soccer players of all time, and he continues to perform at the highest level at the age of 36.
