Abu Dhabi has inaugurated one of the world's largest solar projects, the Al Dhafra Solar PV plant. The plant will generate enough electricity to power almost 200,000 homes and displace 2.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
The plant is located 35 kilometers from Abu Dhabi city and spans over 20 square kilometers of land. It uses bi-facial solar panels, which capture sunlight on both sides of the panels to maximize efficiency. The plant was built in a single phase by a consortium led by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), with partners Masdar, EDF Renewables, and JinkoPower.
The Al Dhafra Solar PV plant is a significant step forward in Abu Dhabi's efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy. The emirate has set a target of generating 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2050.
