ADB Bolsters Pakistan's Sustainable Development with $659 Million Funding

In a significant step to support Pakistan's sustainable development goals, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved three projects worth a total of $658.8 million. These projects aim to enhance domestic resource mobilization, rehabilitate flood-damaged schools, and improve agricultural productivity for food security.

"This substantial new wave of financing will aid Pakistan in recovering from the impacts of last year's cost-of-living crisis and super-floods and steer it back on the path of long-term, sustainable, and inclusive development," remarked ADB Director General for Central and West Asia Yevgeniy Zhukov.

This comprehensive approach underscores the ADB's commitment to assisting Pakistan in "improving its economic situation and enhancing the quality of life for its people."

The ongoing Sindh Secondary Education Improvement Project will receive an additional $275 million as an emergency assistance loan, further bolstering the ADB's pledge to aid Pakistan's recovery from the 2022 floods. This funding will enable the reconstruction of up to 1,600 schools using climate-resilient and gender-inclusive designs, specifically targeting vulnerable communities affected by climate-related disasters in Sindh.

Moreover, a $80 million allocation will be provided to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Security Support Project to address the growing food insecurity exacerbated by climate change. This project aims to enhance food security and bolster the livelihoods of rural farm households, including women, in the province's most flood-stricken districts. It will achieve this by providing essential agriculture inputs and training to smallholder farmers and improving household nutrition.

The ADB's multifaceted support for Pakistan's sustainable development agenda is a testament to its unwavering commitment to the country's long-term prosperity and resilience. These projects will play a crucial role in addressing the nation's pressing challenges and fostering a more inclusive and sustainable future for all Pakistanis.
