Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is the son of late Pakistani politician Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi and the nephew of Chaudhry Manzoor Elahi. Zahoor began his career as a police officer, but he later turned his family's fortunes in politics and business. His family is known as the Chaudhrys of Gujrat, and he was born into a warraich family. From May to August 2004, his cousin and brother-in-law, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, was Prime Minister of Pakistan. He was the parliamentary leader of Pakistan Muslim League (Q), the ruling party. He is also the President of the PML-Q in Punjab and was previously the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. He resigned on September 14, 2008, to Dr. Fahmida Mirza.
